Betsy Cook Lanzen
Bio
Ms. Lanzen joined the Office of General Counsel in 2017 and provides counsel to the university on a wide range of legal issues, primarily focusing on student and academic affairs, risk management, and litigation. Among other areas, Ms. Lanzen advises the university on issues concerning Title IX, discrimination and harassment, admissions, due process, threat assessment and campus safety, student conduct, study abroad, housing, disability accommodations, FERPA, written student complaints, the First Amendment, and other regulatory compliance issues. Ms. Lanzen also advises clients on litigation matters. Prior to joining the Office of General Counsel in 2017, Ms. Lanzen was a partner on the complex business litigation team at two large international law firms, where she counseled clients about protecting their intellectual property and trade secrets and litigated complex business matters involving contract and licensing disputes, claims of misappropriation of trade secrets, unfair and deceptive trade practices, fraud, and other business torts between competitors. Ms. Lanzen graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a B.A. in Political Science and International Studies and received her J.D. from the UNC School of Law in 1998.
