Allison Newhart
Bio
Allison B. Newhart serves as Vice Chancellor and General Counsel for NC State University. As the chief legal officer for the university, she leads a team of attorneys providing mission-oriented legal counsel and representation on a wide range of matters affecting the university. In addition, Ms. Newhart’s practice includes the areas of corporate governance and Board of Trustees matters, regulatory compliance and strategic risk management, academic affairs, athletics, student and employment issues, policies, and litigation.
Prior to joining NC State in January 2019, Ms. Newhart served as Associate General Counsel at The Pennsylvania State University where she focused on labor and employment matters, student affairs, litigation, athletics, and Title IX and Clery Act compliance. Prior to her service at Penn State, Ms. Newhart was in private practice with a law firm in Philadelphia. She is admitted to the North Carolina Bar, Pennsylvania Bar and New Jersey Bar, and is also admitted to practice before various federal courts in those jurisdictions.
Ms. Newhart currently serves on the Board of Directors of the National Association of College and University Attorneys (NACUA). She is currently Vice Chair of the Committee on Legal Education, and served as Chair of the Planning Group for NACUA’s 2019 Compliance Workshop and on several other NACUA committees. She has also served on the boards of various nonprofit organizations. She is a frequent speaker at regional and national higher education conferences and has authored papers and other publications relating to higher education legal issues.
Ms. Newhart received her Bachelor of Arts degree, cum laude, from Lehigh University. She received her Juris Doctor degree, magna cum laude, from Villanova University School of Law (now the Charles Widger School of Law), where she graduated Order of the Coif and was a member of the Villanova Law Review
