Allison B. Newhart Bio

Allison B. Newhart joined NC State as Vice Chancellor and General Counsel on January 31, 2019. Prior to joining NC State, Newhart served as Associate General Counsel at The Pennsylvania State University, where she focused her practice on labor and employment matters, student affairs, litigation, athletics, and Title IX and Clery Act compliance.  She also handled various legal and policy matters, and has taught seminars on legal issues facing institutions of higher education.  Prior to her service at Penn State, Allison was in private practice with a law firm in Philadelphia, where she concentrated her practice in higher education law, commercial litigation and labor and employment matters.  While in private practice, Allison advised institutions of higher education on compliance with federal laws and regulations, risk management issues, and policy drafting, and has represented colleges and universities in litigation. She is admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar and New Jersey Bar, and is also admitted to practice before the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, and the United States District Courts for the Eastern and Middle District of Pennsylvania and the District of New Jersey.

Allison is an active member of the National Association of College and University Attorneys (NACUA).  She regularly coordinates and presents at NACUA conferences, has served on several NACUA committees, and has been a member of the NACUA Notes Editorial Board.  She has also served on the boards of various nonprofit organizations.

Allison received her Bachelors of Art degree, cum laude, from Lehigh University.  She received her Juris Doctor degree, magna cum laude, from Villanova University School of Law (now the Charles Widger School of Law), where she graduated Order of the Coif and was a member of the Villanova Law Review.
