PRR Numbering System

(Posted: 6/22/2006)

NCSU has established a comprehensive system for identification, classification and ease of locating all policies, regulations and rules. The PRR Numbers will be designated by the Office of Legal Affairs before posting to the website after the PRR has cleared the necessary approval levels.

There are 11 functional categories that identify the category that each PRR relates to. There are a total of 73 sub-categories spread across each functional category identified with a simple number in increments of five starting with 05.  Some PRRs listed in a functional category will have a second digit number identified as “00” because there are no sub-categories for this area (Examples: Advance, Intercollegiate Athletics, and Information Technology). Each sub-category has numerous PRRs identified by a sequential number order based on issuance to the university.

numbering example

The example above identifies the Board of Trustees Policy for Bylaws.  The “type of PRR” is identified by the abbreviation in front.  POL identifies this PRR as a Policy.  The first set of numbers identifies the “functional category” this policy relates to.  01 represents Governance and Administration, which is the category the Board of Trustee policies are issued under.  The second set of numbers identifies the “sub-category”.  The sub-category is identified with a simple number in increments of five starting with 05. The third number is simply the sequential number of this PRR for this particular sub-category.

Therefore the example above tells the viewer that this is the first policy related to “governance and administration” issued by the Board of Trustees.
